Barnes / O'Higgins and the Sax Section:
Five saxes plus piano, double bass and drums.
Highly renowned saxophonists Alan Barnes and Dave O'Higgins, now household names
on the UK jazz scene, first played together in the Pizza Express Modern Jazz Sextet for
over ten years starting in the late 80s. Keen to collaborate again, they have created this
unique repertoire for five saxes plus piano, bass and drums, featuring material which spans
a large chunk of the history of jazz, from early Ellington, through
Dexter Gordon to the composers of today.
Alan's writing is imbued with Ellingtonian flavours, while Dave shows a penchant for
harmonising and arranging inspired improvisations of the greats like Dexter Gordon and
Sonny Stitt. Key to the band's immense popularity is it's deep sense of swing and melodic
accessibility, not to mention the leaders' inimitable presentation style.
ALAN BARNES, a five times winner of both the alto sax and clarinet sections at the
British Jazz Awards, has also won the event’s baritone sax section three times. With twenty
solo albums to his name he has performed and recorded with an array of international
artists and groups including Humphrey Lyttelton, Stan Tracey, Mike Westbrook,
Charlie Watts' Tentet, Warren Vache, Scott Hamilton, Ken Peplowski,
Harry Allen, Martin Taylor and David Newton.
Over the years Alan has been commissioned to compose a number of works, including
“The Sherlock Holmes Suite”, “The Swanage Suite” and “The Marbella Suite”, and has
also collaborated with the celebrated dramatist Alan Plater on “Songs For Unsung
Heroes”, “Seven Ages of Jazz” and a musical, “Looking for Buddy”.
Like Alan, DAVE O'HIGGINS is a multi-award-winning saxophonist and a
popular and well-known figure on the international jazz scene. A former member of the
Cleo Laine/John Dankworth Quintet, he has featured in the bands Sax Appeal, the
Clark Tracey Sextet and Martin Taylor's Spirit of Django to name just a few, and has
performed with such well-known artists as Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra,
Jason Rebello, Jamie Cullum, Kyle Eastwood, Peter Gabriel, Stan Tracey and many more.
Dave last appeared at Theatr Clwyd in 2014 with the spectacular Darius Brubeck Quartet,
while in his home city of London he is a regular guest with the house band at
Ronnie Scott’s and plays every month at the 606 Club with his own quartet.
All of tonight's band members are strong and characterful soloists as well as
consummate section players.
The Sax Section is completed by KAREN SHARP,
JUDITH O'HIGGINS and SAMMY MAYNE, with ROBIN ASPLAND (piano),
ADAM KING (double bass) and SEBASTIAAN DE KROM (drums).
