The brilliant young sextet The Brownfield Byrne Hot 6 is a new departure for trumpet and tenor sax players Jamie Brownfield and Liam Byrne.

The once bebop purists have now turned their attention to earlier jazz styles, taking inspiration from Bix and Tram rather than Bird and Dizzy. Their new band, the Hot 6, performs the kind of jazz that really swings and doesn't give you a headache. They play classic jazz, as in everything from New Orleans through the Tin Pan Alley classics and the swing era, to mainstream jazz recalling the
classic small groups of the 1930s.

Jamie, who won the Rising Star category at the 2012
British Jazz Awards and is influenced by the late, great Clifford Brown, has a prodigiously broad style running the gamut of jazz trumpet, while Liam, a postgraduate of London’s Guildhall School of Music, has a growing reputation as a torchbearer of the jazz tenor saxophone tradition, inspired by the likes of Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins.

Featuring guitarist Andy Hulme, one of today’s finest exponents of the instrument, and foremost jazz pianist Tom Kincaid, with an infectious style in the mould of Errol Garner and Oscar Peterson, the band is completed by the energetic rhythm playing of
Jim Swinnerton (double bass) and Jack Cotterill (drums).
