MUSIC OF THE AMERICAS

towen.png

Gyda llinell flaen o fibraffon a gitarau sy’n galw i gof sain grwpiau jazz clasurol y 40au a’r 50au, fel grwpiau Red Norvo a Tal Farlow, caiff Pedwarawd Vic Blackwell/Trefor Owen eu hysbrydoli hefyd

gan harmonïau clòs yr anfarwol George Shearing. Maent hefyd yntalu teyrnged i'r samba o Frasil a bossa nova, gyda chaneuon fel East of the Sun, Lullaby of Birdland a Corcovado. Y piano clasurol oedd offeryn cyntaf

VIC BLACKWELL ond newidiodd i’r fibraffôn pan oedd yn 16 oed ar ôl gweld perfformiad gan yr anfarwol Lionel Hampton. Erbyn hyn, mae galw mawr amdano ledled gogledd-orllewin Prydain ond am flynyddoedd lawer roedd yn chwarae’n rheolaidd yng nghlybiau jazz Llundain, yn cynnwys clwb enwog Ronnie Scott yn Soho. Daeth Vic o dan ddylanwad Lester Young, Errol Garner, Charlie Parker a Gerry Mulligan a bu’n ffefryn yng nghlybiau jazz Glannau Mersi a gyda chynulleidfaoedd yng ngogledd Cymru ers blynyddoedd. Dywed mai’r peth sy’n dod â’r llawenydd mwyaf iddo yw perfformio gyda chwaraewyr da eraill gan roi pleser i gynulleidfa fyw.

Un o Fôn yw TREFOR OWEN, gitarydd jazz gorau Cymru ac mae wedi teithio Prydain gyda gitaryddion o fri fel Mundell Lowe o’r Unol Daleithiau a Louis Stewart o Iwerddon. Mae wedi perfformio llawer yn America hefyd, gan ymddangos yn San Francisco ac LA,

yn y Classic American Guitar Show yn Efrog Newydd, ac yn y Jazz Cafe arbennig yn sefydliad enwog y Smithsonian, Washington DC.

Gydag ANDY HULME (gitâr) a DAVE TURNER (dwbl bas).

With a vibes/guitar front line that evokes the classic jazz groups of the 1940s and 50s

such as those of Red Norvo and Tal Farlow, the Vic Blackwell/Trefor Owen Quartet also takes inspiration from the close harmony sounds of the legendary George Shearing, as well as paying tribute to Brazilian samba and bossa nova, with numbers like East Of The Sun, Lullaby Of Birdland and Corcovado.

VIC BLACKWELL, whose first instrument was classical piano, changed to the vibraphone at sixteen after seeing a performance by the legendary Lionel Hampton. Now in great demand across the North West, for many years he was a regular on the London jazz scene, highlights including an appearance at Ronnie Scott’s

famous club in Soho. Influenced by Lester Young, Errol Garner, Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan, Vic Blackwell has long been a favourite player at Merseyside Jazz clubs and with North Wales audiences. His greatest joy, he says, is to perform with other high calibre players, giving pleasure to a live audience.

TREFOR OWEN, originally from Anglesey, is Wales's premiere jazz guitarist and has

toured the UK with such guitar greats as the USA's Mundell Lowe and Ireland's

Louis Stewart, and performed extensively in the USA, appearing in San Francisco and

LA, at New York's Classic American Guitar Show, and the prestigious Jazz Cafe at the

famous Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC.

With ANDY HULME (guitar) and DAVE TURNER (double bass).
