A recording artist, writer, educator and performer, Corey Christiansen has played and
taught in literally every type of situation around the globe for the last decade.
His first CD as a leader, Awakening, was the initial release on Mel Bay Records
in 2004 and received critical acclaim throughout the jazz community.
Growing up in a musical family, Corey spent much of his youth learning the guitar
after being introduced to the instrument by his father at the age of five. With a
bachelor’s degree from Utah State University Corey left for Tampa, Florida to study
with legendary jazz guitar educator, Jack Petersen, whose teaching duties he took
over a year after earning his master’s degree from the University of South Florida.
Corey's standing as a player and producer was boosted in 2006 when he teamed up
with an all-star band featuring fellow guitarists Vic Juris and Jimmy Bruno, legendary
drummer Danny Gottlieb and first-call New York bassist, Jay Anderson, to record
MB3: Jazz Hits Vol. 1 which spent three weeks as the number one recording on North
American jazz radio.
A guitarist of international renown, Corey has gone on to perform and record with
many outstanding jazz artists including James Moody, George Duke,
Christian McBride, Eric Alexander, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, Alan Pasqua,
Jeff Coffin, John Pisano, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and many, many others.
Returning to his native Utah in 2007 Corey became Director of Curriculum for The
Music School, a privately funded music program outside Salt Lake City. During this
time he continued an extremely active touring schedule, playing all over the US and
Europe, and signed with Origin Records. By the end of February 2008 he had
released Roll With It, followed by Outlaw Tractor. With a style that is rooted in the
tradition of the jazz language but just bluesy and gritty enough to appeal to wider
audiences, All About Jazz called Corey's debut for Origin records, “one of the most
satisfying soul-jazz recordings of the year.”
Recognized as one of the world's pre-eminent jazz guitarists and author of a number
of books for Mel Bay Publications, in 2008 Corey began teaching at Utah State
University and the famed Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, all the while
continuing a busy touring and recording schedule and bringing a wealth of real-world
musical experiences to the classroom.
For this North Wales Jazz Concert Corey Christiansen will be joined by guitarists
ADRIAN INGRAM, TREFOR OWEN and ANDY HULME,
plus BILL COLEMAN (double bass) and ANDY BOLD (drums).
