Brownfield / Byrne HOT SIX

With the Hot Six, once bebop purists Liam Byrne & Jamie Brownfield have now turned their attention to earlier jazz styles, taking inspiration from Bix and Tram rather than Bird and Dizzy. Appearing at jazz clubs and festivals throughout the UK, the Hot 6 performs the kind of jazz that really swings, playing everything from New Orleans through the Tin Pan Alley classics and the swing era, to mainstream jazz recalling the classic small groups of the 1930s.

Jamie Brownfield, who is influenced by Wynton Marsalis and Clifford Brown, won the Rising Star category at the 2012 British Jazz Awards and has a prodigiously broad style running the gamut of jazz trumpet, while Liam Byrne, a postgraduate of London’s Guildhall School of Music, has a growing reputation as a torchbearer of the jazz tenor saxophone tradition, inspired by the likes of Lester Young and Ben Webster.

On keyboards Tom Kincaid has become the first choice of many touring artists and bandleaders, performing recently with jazz saxophonists Art Themen and Scott Hamilton, as well as his childhood hero, rock 'n' roll legend Shakin' Stevens.

The inventive arrangements by the band's co-leader, Liam Byrne, offer a fresh take on this classic repertoire. When asked what an audience can expect from the Brownfield Byrne Hot Six Liam says,

“The combination of bassist Jim Swinnerton, guitarist Andy Hulme and Jack Cotterill on drums creates a really authentic and infectious swing feel, while the talents of stand-out soloists Jamie Brownfield and Tom Kincaid can really energize and lift the band, which hopefully makes for

an exciting listening experience.”
