art of playing jazz, provided you know your way around
the guitar fingerboard this course is for you!

A highly experienced tutor, Randy is currently a professor at New York University. With a musical style which melds Charlie Parker and Dexter Gordon with gospel and the blues, his 11 albums include Muse, Highnote and J Curve recordings. www.randyjohnston.net

Hands-on tuition sessions, i.e. for students who wish to learn in a playing situation

FRIDAY EVENING
7.00pm. Welcome session
A chance to get together with fellow students and meet your tutors
7.30pm - 10.00pm
Group A: A performance based workshop with Randy Johnston. Everyone will have the chance to play, either solo or in a duo, and to discuss
their performance with Randy. Widely renowned bass player Bill Coleman
will be available for advice and accompaniment if required
Group B: Tuition session with Trefor Owen, giving students help with basic skills,
such as learning chords and melodies and improvising over jazz standards
SATURDAY
10am - 12 noon
Group A: Tuition session with Randy Johnston,
based on Friday evening's performances
Group B: A continuation of Friday evening’s tuition session with Trefor Owen
12.15pm – 1.45pm
Student jam session, with bass & drums, in the university’s Fellows Cafe/Bar
2pm - 4pm
Group A: Tuition session with Trefor Owen
Group B: Tuition session with Randy Johnston

are keen to emphasise that this info is only a rough guide, as the most appropriate
teaching is assessed on the day and depends on students’ weaknesses and ability levels
