BRITISH GUEST TUTOR
PAUL VERNON CHESTER
"One of the UK’s finest Gypsy Jazz guitarists, Paul’s playing and compositions are rapidly bringing him to the forefront of the jazz guitar scene. His playing, in the Django tradition, is warm open hearted and high octane! He is internationally respected and has shared stages with some of the world’s finest Gypsy Jazz musicians. Described by one hardened Gypsy Jazz fan as “scarily good” he not only plays with great technical finesse but, most importantly, with enormous charm and soul..."
BRITISH GUEST TUTOR
"Pat Sprakes is a guitarist and double bassist well-known for his ability to provide harmonic and rhythmic sophistication without sacrificing solid swing and groove. His notable guitar duo collaborations include Jim Mullen, Phil Robson, Adrian Ingram, Nigel Price, Jamie Taylor, and Sam Dunn. He has worked with Alan Barnes, Karen Sharpe, Alex Garnett, Roger Beaujolais. He has been a member of the music department staff at Trent College in Nottingham since 2011..."
We are changing to a totally different format to allow smaller groups
and more playing time for students during the weekend.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY
As the attendance over the past eighteen years has settled to around thirty students, divided into two groups which were A advanced Group and B intermediate Group, with twenty plus students in the A Group and ten or so in the B Group, the new format, which we are introducing at our forthcoming April 2019 event, will have smaller groups which will be based on the choice of jazz standards.
The standards listed below vary from challenging to less challenging. Each student is asked to choose five tunes that he/she will be most comfortable with in order to get the most out of the weekend.
When you have enrolled and chosen the five tunes you will be allocated a group with other students who have chosen similar tunes.
There will be four groups with around eight students in each group, and four tutors, including New York’s Vic Juris, who will move around the groups – we anticipate that each tutor will have a different take on each of the standards. As was the case at previous weekends, the Friday evening teaching session will be two and a half hours in duration and the sessions on Saturday and Sunday will be two hours in duration. In each session there will be masses of playing time but also time for discussion and tuition.
As in the past, there will be lunchtime student jam sessions, (the tunes played can be the student’s own choice),
and a Saturday evening concert.
With smaller groups, there will be more playing time in class and the tutor will be advising instead of performing a two-hour lecture.
As we have stated at previous jazz guitar weekends, no one will be forced to play and those at a beginners in jazz level will be catered for.
From the list please choose tunes that you don’t normally play, but you are familiar with and you would like to work on. It is hoped that all students will leave the weekend with a few more jazz standards added to their repertoire.
