This month’s North Wales Jazz concert at the Farmers Arms celebrates the arrival of spring with a performance by the top notch, sax-led Mike Hall Quartet.

Mike, already a favourite of North Wales jazz lovers, began his musical career with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, (NYJO), afterwards joining the late, great pianist
Michael Garrick’s big band, with which he toured Malaysia
and made several recordings and broadcasts.

Highlights of his busy schedule in recent months have included concerts with
Pete Long’s Echoes of Ellington at the 2012 Marlborough and Hertfordshire
Jazz Festivals, a UK-wide tour, including a performance at Manchester’s prestigious Band on the Wall, with Andy Scott’s nine-sax outfit Sax Assault, appearances at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall in December’s Sinatra concert and “Swing into the New Year”, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by
John Wilson, whose Hooray for Hollywood and Broadway concerts at the
BBC Proms have been voted an astounding success by Royal Albert Hall audiences and millions of television viewers alike, and a performance with the
Steve Waterman Big Band at February’s Southport Jazz Weekend.

Mike is a winner of John Dankworth’s Wavendon All Music Award and head of jazz studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he is director of the RNCM Big Band and Jazz Collective.

Performing with Mike Hall tonight are accomplished players Dan Whieldon (keyboards), who obtained a masters degree in jazz at Brussels’s Royal Conservatoire, and two of the North West’s finest jazz musicians,
Pete Turner (double bass) and Eryl Roberts (drums).
