featuring Vasilis Xenopoulos

Tuesday 28 Ocotober / Dydd Mawrth 28 Hydref

North Wales Jazz is proud to present The Nigel Price Organ Quartet, featuring the outstanding Vasilis Xenopoulos on tenor saxophone. Winners of the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Awards for “best jazz ensemble” and led by Nigel Price, one of Britain’s finest guitarists, the band will be making the Royal British Legion, Llay near Wrexham its exclusive North Wales stop during its extensive UK autumn tour.

On tenor saxophone Vasilis Xenopoulos has been described by The Times as “One of the most fiery young saxophonists around [who] blazes a path through the hard bop repertoire”. Since moving to London in 2002, after completing a scholarship at the prestigious Berkley College of Music in the US, the Athens-born saxman has worked with some of the best musicians on the British jazz scene, such as Jim Mullen, Steve Waterman, Alan Barnes, Derek Nash, Bruce Adams, Martin Shaw, Ray Gelato and many others, while on an international level he has appeared with a variety of top performers such as sensational pianists Hiromi, and

Jason Lindner.

Together with the phenomenal Matt Home and Ross Stanley and drums and Hammond organ  this is one of the most exciting jazz bands in the UK today, having performed at hundreds of venues both in this country and abroad, including six residencies at Ronnie Scott’s, while this current tour sees them playing at a staggering forty venues from St Ives to Edinburgh. The by-product of this amount of work is a tight-knit chemistry rarely seen between four musicians, an enormous repertoire, and the ability to put on a well thought out concert which entertains from start to finish.

The band draws unashamedly upon its 1960s influences yet delivers an up to date take on the music, with intelligent, enthusiastic, well arranged, soulful and above all swinging brand of jazz. Their new CD, “Hit The Road” has just been released to great acclaim, and their

2011 release, “Heads & Tales”, was voted fifth best worldwide jazz album of the year in

Mojo magazine.

As the band's reputation precedes them, this exclusive North Wales performance is an event which is sure to draw fans of great music from far and wide!

The band's leader and driving force, guitarist Nigel Price, who is a former member of the James Taylor Quartet and a regular performer at London's Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, has performed with the BBC Big Band and recorded under the legendary Acid Jazz label. His blend of flowing bebop lines, blues feeling and the will to swing has made him a big hit with jazz fans all over the country.
