Paulus Schafer Trio

We at North Wales Jazz are delighted to open our autumn season in the Wrexham area with the internationally acclaimed Paulus Schäfer Trio, who stop off in Llay during a short tour of the UK.

One of the most talented and renowned Gypsy Jazz guitarists from The Netherlands,

PAULUS SCHAEFER was born in 1978 into a Dutch Sinti (Gypsy) community where he took up the guitar at a very early age, learning from legendary Sinti players including Wasso Grünholz and

Stochelo Rosenberg, as well as from the recordings of his idol, Django Reinhardt.

After a short period of time in which Paulus took over the lead guitar of Jimmy Rosenberg in the Gypsy

Kids, he formed the Paulus Schäfer Gypsy Band and in 2002 recorded his debut album 'Into the Light', which introduced him to the international stage and saw him perform at major festivals across Europe, including the Sziget Festival in Budapest and France's Django Reinhardt Festival at Samois-sur-Seine, as well as at the Djangofest in the US.

One of today's leading lights on the gypsy jazz circuit, Paulus can often be found on stage with players like Biréli Lagrène, Stochelo Rosenberg, Fapy Lafertin, Jimmy Rosenberg,

Tim Kliphuis, Andreas Öberg and many more, and has featured on many albums along the way.

In 2006 he recorded two more albums as The Paulus Schäfer Gypsy Band, ‘Desert Fire’ and ‘Live at the NWE Vorst’ featuring the Tilburg Big Band, and in 2012 he recorded 'Twelfth Year' with renowned

violinist Tim Kliphuis, plus Stochelo and Nous’che Rosenberg. Just a few months later he released

'Rock Django', again with Tim Kliphuis, while the same year saw the beginning of a fruitful

collaboration with Finnish guitarist Olli Soikkeli and tonight's double bass player, Arnoud van den Berg

with the band, Hot Club d’Europe.

More recently Paulus has released the album, 'Rocky', with accordionist Dominique Paats, and he

continues to participate in touring projects such as Five Great Guitars and

Manouche Nouveau.

Completing the Paulus Schäfer Trio, Shropshire-based CHRIS QUINN (guitar) has earned an

international reputation playing at venues including BB King's Blues Club and Grille in New York and

London’s Royal Albert Hall, while Dutch double bass sensation ARNOUD VAN DEN BERG made his name in the Jimmy Rosenberg band and now spends his time backing many of the world's leading gypsy musicians like Paulus Schafer, Robin Nolan and Stochelo Rosenberg.

A rare opportunity to hear this exciting band and definitely a concert not to be missed!
