Trefor Owen, who has a unique approach to improvisation, is one of the foremost jazz guitar teachers in the UK with over thirty years' experience teaching at the highest level in Britain, Europe and the USA.


For eight of those years he was an associate lecturer at Leeds College of Music and for twenty four years was visiting lecturer at Liverpool Community College. In 2006, for the third consecutive year, he toured California, appearing in San Francisco and at John Pisano’s Guitar Night at Spazio’s, Sherman Oaks, L.A, and has since performed in the Jazz Bar at the Classic American Guitar Show and at the prestigious Jazz Cafe, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC.

Trefor continues to perform at venues across the UK both with his duo partner

Andy Hulme and his band Shades of Shearing, which was featured at the 2013 Brecon Jazz festival.


For eight years, between 2000 and 2008, he led a team of international guitarists performing and tutoring at the North Wales International Jazz Guitar Festival and Summer School, the biggest jazz guitar event in the world, where his teaching won annual applause, and has since been resident tutor at each of the highly renowned bi-annual jazz guitar weekends presented by North Wales Jazz. In addition, he has conducted celebrity workshops at Cork International Jazz Festival, London's Guitar Institute, the Zinc Bar, New York, New York Guitar Show, the Chet Atkins Convention in Nashville, Jazzmasters Workshops, Carmel, USA, in Provence and, most recently, the Scottish borders. Alongside his many teaching and performance commitments, Trefor runs an astoundingly popular jazz guitar club in the Cheshire village of Cheadle, where his teaching studio is based.
